Battle of the Burger @ Wylam Brewery

The Concept

Battle of the Burger has returned to Wylam Brewery to celebrate their second year.

Ten vendors from the Newcastle area come together to battle it out to win the title of 'BEST BURGER 2017', each serving up 100g patties which best represents their menus.

You need to collect tokens from the entrance when you arrive. £3 per token and every token = a burger/slider. Pretty amazing value when you see the size of these creations!

This year they have an app which you download free and vote for your winner.

The Venue

The best part, it's a FREE event... no the best part is the BEER!

The host, Wylam Brewery serve up their amazing, as usual, selection of craft beers and ales.

I recommend Hickey the Rake, an ultra pale ale with a citrus zing.

If you prefer India Pale Ales then order the Jakehead IPA - rich, bright and amber with lots of American hop aroma.

Wylam's home, The Palace of Arts, at Exhibition Park is a truly stunning venue for any occasion. So what better to drink beer, eat burgers and listen to great music either in The Great Hall, or outside overlooking the gorgeous scenery.

The Verdict

So yesterday afternoon Michael and I walked over to the venue, more than hungry and more than excited to see what was on offer. The only problem... deciding which burgers to try! We bought four tokens and decided to split the burgers to try as many as we could. With the exception of one in particular, where we just HAD to get one each.

The Grind

A perfectly packed juicy burger with a chilli kick and oozing with cheese. These guys had a great system, the burgers were ready all wrapped up and flying out of the stall. The first burger we tried and what a bite of heaven it was.

A big fan of their sloppy but tasty BBQ pulled meat boards at their Mosley St joint. They served up a pretzel bun stuffed with a hog + beef patty, monterey jack cheese, bacon jam, red cabbage pickle and burger sauce. WOW.  The right amount of meat to cheese to pickle ratio left my tastebuds tingling and wanting more.

Fat Hippo

A firm fave of ours for a cheeky Deliveroo order on a Sunday night. They had their camper van style kitchen parked up centre stage, preparing their 'Hail to the String' creation. A beef patty topped with Monterey jack cheese, chilli and bacon string fries, pickle back slaw, chorizo butter, smothered in their signature Fat Hippo sauce and served in a soft brioche bun.

Lola Jeans

These babes already have a special place in my heart. My go to place in town that never lets me down, and once again they smashed it. In their vintage style shipping container, this year they serve up the James P Sullivan burger. Two patties, mature cheddar, prime rump steak, shoestring onions, creamy steak sauce, bbq dip, red onion jam and topped with a cute lil pickled onion monster munch. STOP THE SEARCH. WE HAVE A WINNER.

Final Thoughts

Other vendors that unfortunately we were too stuffed to try were: ZapatistaReds True Bbq, Jam Jar, The Shilling, Saucy Burger and Wylam Burgery.

If I had the room I would have tried Zapatista, a Mexican style topped burger on a bed of nachos.

The Chip Advisor is also there serving up huge portions of chips too!

Wylam Brewery is host to lots of similar foodie events ran by 44 events, such as Argie Bhaji and Thai Kwondo.

If you're in the area I 100% recommend going along, and if you're reading this post today (15/04) ... you're in luck. They're doing it all again today, 12 midday til 12 midnight.

Check out their Facebook for more info and if you go let me know who was your fave!

Love Luce x

  1. I'm sure you have a picture of one of my neighbours ... can't be too sure as I don't really know him, just see him on the bus (small world!)

I really really wish I'd gone to this now ... I was being a southern softie and decided it looked a bit too cold and wet .. daft really cos those burgers would have warmed me up!

Still not made it to Wylam Brewery yet, we were going for some food once but it was shut so we ended up pressing our noses to the window and it looked so lovely inside.

Seriously impressed with the amount of burgers you managed to get through - good work!

    1. It is a small world!! Also it did chuck it down at one point and everyone rushed inside but once that passed it was fine! Wylam is beautiful and I did share those burgers, I couldn't have managed them all by myself haha! x
