Central Oven and shaker review

Pizza, Pizza, Pizza,

.

..

Ha, I genuinely started typing this review, got hungry, craved pizza, ate pizza and now I’m back!
So… where were we? Oh yes… Pizza (I’ll try not let it happen again, can’t promise though)
If you haven’t already guessed I bloody LOVE pizza. I’m a self-confessed pizza enthusiast and probably its number one fan.

Here is a quick explanation of why it’s the best food ever and I’ll try not to go off on a tangent (again can’t promise). You can eat it anytime of the day!! All toppings and condiments are welcome! It helps you make friends *shout out to Barry the delivery guy* It’s easy to make! Even a gif of a pizza can perk you up. It’s perfect hot or cold and finally… CHEESE.

So it’s no surprise that I need to find a great pizza place in my area that I can always rely on. And I’m pretty sure I’ve done just that. Let me introduce to you Central Oven + Shaker.

“The holy grail of pizzas born in Naples and now raised in Newcastle. This little number never fails to disappoint, its signature puffy light edges, San Marzano tomato & fior di latte mozzarella base make it the perfect starting point for our top notch toppings” - Central Oven + Shaker

It opened its doors at the back end of last year and has quickly become not only my favourite pizza joint, but my favourite place in Newcastle. I’m lucky to work just a 5 minute stroll away which makes it the perfect spot for a mid-week lunch break with colleagues.

From 12-3 Monday to Friday they have a lunch deal which is fantastic value for money! You can demolish a 7 inch pizza and a side salad for just £6. The pizzas include margarita, four shroom, pepperoni, roast veg or chicken pesto. This is accompanied with the choice of either rocket and hazelnut salad or mixed leaf.

I’ve visited Central five times and every time can’t help but be seduced by the pepperoni! I’ve also tried the chicken pesto (another winner) and the Margarita! Plenty of toppings on a thick but fluffy, succulent base. The black spots show how quickly this baby is cooked and in less than 10 minutes from placing your order you’re already devouring the cheesy goodness.

It’s literally straight outside of the train station so ideal for when friends come to visit. Central is open until 2am Monday to Wednesday and 3am Friday to Sunday so there’s plenty of time to enjoy a late pizza and appreciate the extensive cocktail list. Because not only has Central created the most faultless pizza, they really know their stuff with thirst quenchers too. They’ve created the fanciest cocktails with an Italian twist. Their signature cotton candy cocktail is both aesthetically beautiful and super tasty! You can get two of the same cocktails for £10 on Monday-Friday during 4pm-7pm.

If I can recommend anything it would be to order the Central fries which are big enough to share between two (or not). They’re sprinkled in parmesan, truffle oil, rosemary and served with the most fragrant garlic aioli and a fresh tomato dip.

I haven’t tried the starters or desserts here yet but that will be next on my list as I had huge food envy when a plate of baby buffalo mozzarella balls passed our table. The cheesecake also looks amazing, but as a carb lover I like to fill up on the savoury stuff.

Central’s décor is very pleasing to the eye. Modern marble furniture and the bright pastel theme add to the fresh contemporary interior. Fitted with an authentic Neapolitan pizza oven and fully stocked bar, Central ticks all the boxes for being one of the most Instagrammable places in town. Passionate and friendly staff are there to welcome you upon arrival and provide attentive service throughout your dining experience.

It’s the little details such as the infused table water, the waiters introducing themselves by name and the offer of olive oil, balsamic vinegar and parmesan with your meal that all add to the dining experience.

I’ve also heard they do takeaways (no delivery) which make it even easier for me to pick one up on the way home from work. So if it’s a proper Italian pizza and elegant cocktails that you’re looking for in a great central location, visit Central Oven + Shaker… trust me you won’t be disappointed.
