The best week of the year

Monday, 23 January 2017

I get as excited for the run up to Newcastle Restaurant Week as I do for my birthday. It’s a whole week where the majority of the eateries in Newcastle have amazing discounts on their grub! Most places have 2 or 3 courses for £10 or £15 which is ahhhmazing. I honestly get so excited over this kinda thing. FOOD and DISCOUNT, my two faves.

As soon as the list is released with the offers available, I get booked in straight away. As I’m *trying* to train for The Mad March Mare I thought maybe best to tone it down to only visiting 2 places rather than the usual 3-4.

Now that Eldon Square has had a makeover and 982518 new restaurants have moved in, it’s even harder to choose. Hop & Cleaver without a doubt has to be number 1 on my list. They do the most amazing value tasting crate for only £10. This includes a charred sticky glazed rib, a pulled pork slider, a pot of smoky 14 hour smoked brisket, two charred smoked sausage quarters, two Hop & Cleaver style buffalo wings, fries, pit beans, slaw, garden salad and not forgetting the two cheeky dill pickles. So we chose Thursday night to channel our inner Henry VIII.

Hop and Cleaver

OBVIOUSLY we demolished the whole lot. I was brought up to finish everything on my plate and that’s exactly what I did. I was SO full in fact we had to take an Uber home, even though it’s a 20 minute walk. It is uphill though and as soon as I imagined myself back at home with my pjs on, lying on the sofa, soothing my bloated tum I couldn’t have travelled home any other way.  After a few hours of truly believing that I didn’t want to ever eat again, a glistening wrapper of a peanut butter cup caught my eye… the rest is history.

Does anyone else have a second stomach just purely for dessert?

We booked Chaopraya for Saturday afternoon, a fab new edition to the Toon’s restaurant scene. We were welcomed by a lady in a traditional costume and guided to our table, surrounded by truly authentic d├ęcor which was overlooking Grey's Monument. They offer two courses for £10 which is amazing value for this fine dining Thai experience.

Let me just tell you about the most incredible Lamb massaman curry in the world! Ridiculously tender meat in a strong fragrant sauce, I just could not get enough... no literally because I didn’t order it, Michael did! After the first taste I was hooked and managed to persuade him swap half of my Thai green curry with his. This is our second visit to Chaopraya and will certainly be back soon.

The countdown is on… eeek only 51 weeks until the next restaurant week!
